Audience: Malaysian Financio users for LHDN e-Invoice
Purpose: Retrieve a contact's Tax Identification Number (TIN) and Business Registration Number (BRN/SSM Number) for e-Invoice submission, when these have not been provided directly. Validate a contact's given TIN and BRN for valid e-Invoice submission.
Quick Reference
| What you need | How to get it |
| TIN (Tax Identification Number) | Look up via MyTax Portal (free) |
| BRN / SSM Number | Request from your contact directly |
Part 1: Getting the BRN (SSM Number) from Your Contact
The BRN is your contact's official company registration number issued by Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM). The simplest and most accurate way to get this is to request it directly from your contact.
What to Ask For
Ask your contact to send you a copy of their SSM company details, which they can retrieve from their own SSM records. This typically includes:
- Their Registration Number (BRN, Old + New is best practice) — the number you need for Financio
*Note: The BRN used for e-Invoicing may be the old / new one, depending on which one the contact used to register to LHDN with - Registered company name
- Registered business address
- SST registration number (if applicable)
Acceptable Formats
Any of the following from your contact is sufficient:
- A photo or scan of their SSM Certificate of Incorporation (Form 9 / Section 17 / Notice of Registration)
- A screenshot or PDF from their SSM e-Info / MyDataSSM account
- A photo or scan of their business licence or SST registration certificate (BRN is usually printed on these)
Why request it instead of looking it up? Asking your contact directly is faster, free, and ensures the BRN you record matches what they have officially registered. SSM lookup services charge per search and are best reserved for due-diligence cases.
To verify the BRN of yourself or your customer is valid, you may use this website https://www.ssm.com.my/Pages/e-Search.aspx or search "Search BRN" on your browser, and it should be the first link.
Input the old / new BRN into the search box accordingly and it should populate with the details. If using either does not show, then the BRN they have given you may not be correct and require further checking with them.
*Note: for old BRN when searching, you may need to remove the alphabet at the end before searching)
Part 1: Finding the TIN via MyTax Portal
What You'll Need
Before starting, gather one of the following for the contact:
- Business Registration Number (BRN) — for companies
- NRIC — for Malaysian individuals
- Passport Number — for foreign individuals
- Army Number — for military personnel
You'll also need your own MyTax login (Digital Certificate or ID/password).
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Log in to MyTax Portal
Go to https://mytax.hasil.gov.my and log in using your Digital Certificate or ID.
Step 2: Select “TIN Search”
Within the menu bar, select the TIN Search option.
Step 3: Choose the Search Category
Select the appropriate ID Type from the dropdown:
- Business Registration Number (for companies)
- NRIC (for Malaysian individuals)
- Passport Number (for foreigners)
- Army Number (for military personnel)
Step 4: Select Individual or Other than Individuals (Company)
Key in the necessary information such as IC No. / Passport No. / BRN / etc...
Then click Search.
Tip: The name / numbers must match LHDN's records exactly. For companies, use the registered business registration number from SSM. For individuals, use the full name / numbers as per their NRIC/Passport.
Step 5: Retrieve the TIN
If the details match, the system will display the contact's TIN. Copy this TIN for use in Financio.
No result? Double-check the spelling and ID number. If still no result, the contact may not yet be registered with LHDN — request the TIN directly from them. The TIN and BRN number are part of the necessary requirements for e-Invoices to be valid from LHDN for most records.
Adding the TIN and BRN to Your Contact in Financio
- Make sure you have completed the LHDN e-Invoice Integration within the Integrated Apps page
- Go to Contacts, select the contact, click Edit
- Paste the TIN into the TIN Number field
- Paste the BRN into the Business Registration Number field
- Click Save
The contact is now ready for e-Invoice submission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My previously submitted e-Invoices to my customers were valid — why are they now suddenly invalid or unable to be sent?
There may be changes going on from LHDN / MyInvois on how they validate the TIN No. or BRN No. of your contacts. Taxpayers / Companies must make sure they have updated their new 12-digit BRN through the e-Kemaskini in MyTax Portal. Without doing so, the system will only recognize the old BRN as the valid identifier.
Q: What if my contact refuses to share their BRN?
The BRN is generally considered public business information and is required on official invoices under Malaysian regulations. If a contact is unwilling to share it, you may look it up via SSM e-Info at https://www.ssm-einfo.my.
Q: Can I search for multiple TINs at once?
No, MyTax Portal only supports one TIN search at a time.
Q: What if my contact is a foreign company without a Malaysian TIN or BRN?
Use the general TIN code EI00000000020 for foreign buyers, as per LHDN guidelines. BRN can be left blank or filled with the foreign company's equivalent registration number or using NA, depending on the scenario.
Q: My own company's BRN — where do I find it?
Your BRN is on your SSM Certificate of Incorporation, your business licence, and most other official SSM-issued documents.
